Dimitar Berbatov

2006 - 2008

Dimitar signed from Budesliga side Bayern Leverkusen in 2006 having scored 69 goals in 154 appearances. “Berba” consistently scored in his time at the German club, his highlight scoring 46 goals in his final two seasons there.

The Bulgarian made an instant impact, scoring on his home debut, in a 2-0 win over Sheffield United, and he soon began to find the form he showed in Germany. The casual playmaker scored 12 goals in his opening season in England.

Berbatov scored his first hat-rick in English football on 29th December 2007 against Reading in a 6-4 win. He then went on to score a penalty in the League Cup Final against Chelsea in February drawing the match level at 1-1, on our way to a 2-1 victory at Wembley.

Despite lifting the League Cup, Dimitar’s head was turned by interest from Manchester United meaning he did not play a part in the opening stages of the 2008/2009 season. The Bulgarian finally moved to Old Trafford on August transfer deadline day.

Berbatov enjoyed a successful start to his Manchester United career, winning the Premier League in his first season and appearing in the European Cup final, which United lost 2-0 to Barcelona. “Berba” went on to have a mixed few seasons at Old Trafford, struggling to make an impact in 2009/2010, but becoming the Premier League top goal scorer along side Carlos Tevez, despite this he was dropped from the squad as Manchester United again reached the European Cup final, losing 3-1 to Barcelona.
