Target Group:People with Learning Disabilities.Funded by:National Grid.Partners:National Grid, Special Olympics Great Britain.Content:We provide regular and sustainable football opportunities for athletes both with and without learning disabilities to take part in football together, focusing on matching ability levels through Special Olympics Unified Football. The project has created and developed 10 sustainable groups across London throughout 2010/2011 season and during the 2011/2012 season the project will branch out into Middlesex, Essex, Hertfordshire and Kent to develop further opportunities. These groups are supported to become part of the Special Olympics Great Britain family. The grant also provides events across SOGB, aimed at the promotion and further development of Unified Football and Special Olympics Great Britain.
The support we have from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is a real boost for Unified Football. The Foundation has a great reputation within London and indeed across the country and to have their experience and resources to deliver this project on Special Olympics GB’s behalf is greatJason Cornwell, Special Olympics Great Britain
Why needed: • There are an estimated 1.2 million people with a learning disability in the UK.• It is estimated that there are between 230,000 and 350,000 people with severe learning disabilities – that is 3-4 per 1,000 of the population. • It is estimated that there are between 580,000 and 1,750,000 people with moderate learning disabilities – that is 6 per 1,000 of the population.• Special Olympics GB are seeking support from Football bodies to help the organisation to increase the amount of unified football opportunities across GB. At present, we are the only organisation to have their own regional Unified Football Project.• Unified Football is a great pathway for players with learning disabilities to take part in Inclusive Football opportunities, leading on to long term social change which is important for personal development. Impact: • We will develop and support 10 new sustainable SOGB groups within the Greater London Region and in Year 2 of the project will extend into surrounding counties. • We support these groups to become self-sustainable by providing them with skills to apply for their own funding using the SOGB charity number, mentoring and support for volunteers and coaches and support in creating a committee for each group to oversee future development and sustainability.• We will support these groups in registering a total of 400 new Athletes and Unified Partners, as well as new qualified coaches and volunteers.• We will support the development of North and South London Unified Football Leagues, including organising friendly Unified Football matches within the Greater London Region for the new SOGB groups. This is set to be replicated in the surrounding counties of Greater London.• We will provide 10 Unified Football training and awareness events.
