Having risen from our Academy up to senior level, Nabil Bentaleb joined Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 on loan in August, 2016, until the end of the 2016-17 season.
After making his first team breakthrough for us in 2013-14, Nabil put together a string of fine performances in 2014-15, making 36 appearances in all competitions as well as representing Algeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
He started 25 matches in the Premier League that season and formed a useful partnership with fellow Academy product Ryan Mason that got better as the season progressed. Both started the Capital One Cup Final at Wembley in March, 2015 - two of five Academy products to do so.
He signed a new deal at the club in July, 2015, but ankle and subsequent knee injuries disrupted his 2015-16 campaign and he only managed 11 first team appearances in addition to playing three times for our Under-21s, scoring once against Southampton.
Born in Lille, France, Nabil joined our Academy in January, 2012, after an initial trial.
He went on to play eight times for our Under-18s in 2011-12, including the FA Youth Cup, and was Player of the Tournament and top scorer at the Stemwede Tournament in May, 2012.
Nabil kicked on again in 2012-13 and enjoyed a strong second half of the season. He went on to play nine times for the Under-18s, scoring once, and featured in all eight NextGen Series matches, again with one goal.
His performances led to a breakthrough in the Under-21s where he made 14 appearances in total, including 11 starts, and scored three goals, including the winner against Arsenal at Barnet.
After impressing for our Under-21s, Nabil was thrown into first team action with his debut off the bench in our Premier League win at Southampton on December 22, 2013. He went on to feature in 20 of our final 27 matches in all competitions that season including a run of nine straight starts in January and February, 2014.
