One recent welcome visitor to our new Training Centre was our former Double-winning right-back Peter Baker, who lives locally in Enfield.
Peter deservedly had his many admirers during his great years here. And this is how our official book, ’61 The Spurs Double summed up his massive contribution during those true glory years:
“In a team liberally served with individual brilliance his talent was often overlooked, tending toward the methodical rather than the mercurial. He was a genial if unassuming character who simply got on with the job. But the job he did was crucial.

“In tandem with Ron Henry on the opposite flank, Baker was a vital component of the Tottenham side and integral to ensuring its smooth running. He performed with precision and reliability, underpinning the flair for which the team became rightly famous.
“The Double side needed Baker. Operating as right-back, he frequently had to cover for Danny Blanchflower whose inspired sojourns were a joy to behold but could leave Spurs open on the right-hand side. Baker’s efficiency, positioning and assured use of the ball provided the calm resolution in defence that ensured none of the fireworks up front went to waste.
