After a 2-2 FA Cup fourth round draw at Cresty Road, nobody expected a 13-2 outcome in the replay! But that’s exactly what the 64,365 White Hart Lane crowd was to witness.Indeed we had needed a late save from goalkeeper Bill Brown at Crewe to keep us in it as Spurs, top of the Division One table on the day, struggled at times against the Railwaymen who were 17th in the Fourth Division.But we hit top form at the Lane and had banged in 10 goals by the break! Les Allen and Cliff Jones, our goalscorers in the first leg, were very much to the fore again in the rout.
Bobby Smith started it off in the third minute and would go on to record four goals. Allen did better with five while Jones bagged a hat-trick, including a penalty after he had been brought down by Roy Warhurst. Tommy Harmer was also on target.
As the rain poured down Tim Coleman had pulled one back for Crewe to give his side hope at 3-1 while Bert Llewellyn grabbed another consolation at 12-2......
