He already possessed all the skill, potential and natural reflexes to send him on the road from his Gillingham home to our nursery club Northfleet in 1937 at the age of 16.
With such a great grounding – and by now Tottenham and England’s number one – it was no surprise that the totally dedicated Ditchburn was used by the Football Association in a series of coaching charts that dealt with each position individually.
