John White - The Ghost of White Hart Lane

It is now 50 years since the great John White tragically died at the height of his career when he was struck by lightning on July 21, 1964, at Crews Hill Golf Course. Club historian Andy Porter looks back on the career of a special Spurs talent whose legendary status will endure for a long time to come.

Considering the impact that John White had on the fortunes of Spurs in the early Sixties, it is surprising how easy it was for Bill Nicholson to snap up the young Scottish international when he approached Falkirk for his signature in 1959.

Nicholson’s counterpart at the Scottish club, Tommy Younger, had described White as “the most complete footballer I have ever seen.”

In his autobiography Bill relates that Leicester City and Chelsea had made offers with City being close to reaching a deal with Falkirk.
