Drew Spence: “It was important for us to get a result"

Drew Spence produced an inspiring performance in our valiant comeback at Everton down to secure a 2-2 draw at Walton Hall Park on Saturday in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Trailing by two goals to the Toffees inside the opening 15 minutes of the game, we once again had to show character to fight back and the experienced midfielder was involved in most of the action in the first half as, on 36 minutes, Spence saw her low shot cannon off the post following good work from Grace Clinton to win possession on the edge of the box.

However, the 31-year-old, who returned to the starting XI after missing the previous game against Brighton, got a vital goal on the stroke of half time to open her account for the campaign and, more importantly, cut the deficit.

Then, three minutes after the break, Spence provided the assist for Bethany England’s equaliser as she nicked the ball off Clare Wheeler inside the box before playing it across to our captain to fire home from close-range to complete the comeback.

Spence was pleased to get on the scoresheet for the first time this season, but admitted they wanted more than a point in Merseyside after creating numerous opportunities following Bethany's leveller.

We are showing great character to come back, but we need to start winning these games to put more points on the board.

“It was important for us to get a result from this game, but we are disappointed because we keep putting ourselves in those positions and we know we are better than that,” the midfielder told SPURSPLAY after the game.

“I think we dominated the whole game, they had two chances and took them both, but we have had a lot of chances this week that we should have converted, I should have scored another one myself. It’s steps in the right direction and we are happy with the point, but we know we want more.

“We are showing great character to come back, but we need to start winning these games to put more points on the board.

“Of course I’m happy with the goal, like I said, I should have scored earlier and that frustrated me a little bit, but happy with the goal and the assist,” she added. “It has never taken me this long to score a goal in the season so, finally, it has come.”

We are just now exactly one week away until we compete in our first-ever Adobe Women’s FA Cup final, facing Manchester United in the showpiece event at Wembley, and Spence admits the full focus can now be put on next Sunday.

“We are just carrying on what we are doing, we haven’t focused too much on the final yet, obviously we have had games before that,” our number 24 said.  “I think everyone is excited for the final now and we can actually focus on that, so we will have a rest and start looking forward to it.”
